Safe Environment Program

“As Christian adults, we have a moral and legal responsibility and are entrusted by God with the spiritual, emotional and physical well being of minors and vulnerable adults as they participate in activities within or sponsored by our Diocese. It is our responsibility and commitment to provide an environment which is safe and nurturing.”

Safe Environment Process

  1. Registered parishioners who wish to volunteer should first contact the staff member or ministry leader in charge of the ministry. They will conduct the required interview.

  2. Then you will go to the VIRTUS website and register for your volunteer profile.

  3. You will fill out the required information. VIRTUS will send a notification to the Safe Environment Officer who will then begin to process your profile.

  4. You will receive emails from the Safe Environment Officer and\or the VIRTUS environment for your requirements. This will include completing an online training course.

  5. After completing your interview, your training, your references respond, and your background check comes back, you will receive a notice that you will be cleared.  If anything does not allow you to be cleared, the Safe Environment Officer will reach out to you to discuss what the issues are.

  6. Each year you will receive an email from the VIRTUS environment that you need to take a renewal class.  All renewal training videos can be viewed online.

Safe Environment Requirements at OLA

  1. All adult volunteers must satisfy the Safe Environment requirements. When you complete this process, you are considered a “cleared adult.”

  2. Adult volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, and a registered member of Our Lady of Angels parish for at least 6 months.

  3. Young people under the age of 18 do not participate in the Safe Environment Program. Youth and teens are encouraged to serve in ministries appropriate for their age.
