Lector Ministry

“Let the words of my mouth be acceptable, the thoughts of my heart before You, Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

Psalm 19:15

Lectors are a ministry of service of God and neighbor through the proclamation of God’s Word at Mass. This ministry of service leads one to a deeper relationship with God through prayer and contemplation of the Sacred Scriptures.

What are the requirements to serve in this ministry?

To be considered for service as a lector, one must be able to speak clearly and comfortable in front of large groups of people. In addition, one must:

  1. Be a registered, safe-environment cleared parishioner of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church

  2. Be a fully initiated Catholic (baptized, confirmed, receiving Holy Eucharist) with an active faith life: attending Sunday Mass each week, regularly going to confession, and having a habit of daily prayer

  3. If married, the marriage must be a union witnessed by the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Marriage

  4. If unmarried, one’s single lifestyle must be in public conformity with the teachings of the Catholic Church (e.g., no cohabitation).

  5. Complete an initial lector training as well as an annual renewal/re-commissioning training.

Youth who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation also may serve as lectors after training.
