Next weekend, April 28-29, we will offer the Sacrament of the Sick at our all Masses for those Catholics over the age of seven, who are in danger of death due to disease or chronic illness, or advanced age. The faithful who are baptized and who have reached the age of reason are eligible to receive the Sacrament of the Sick, if they are faced with a serious illness that puts them in danger of death -- even if death is not strictly imminent. A doctor need not be consulted to determine eligibility in this regard. Common sense and prudence are sufficient for determining if an illness is serious enough to warrant the sacrament. Advanced age (65+) can present a gray area, but pastors usually can make a practical judgment, usually erring in favor of the administration of the Sacrament.
