Silence and darkness greet us as we begin the third day of the Triduum. A vigil service is held after nightfall on Holy Saturday in commemoration of Jesus' death and harrowing of Hell. The Paschal Candle, whose lighting symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, is lit from the new Easter fire. The Paschal Candle is brought to the altar in silence and the deacon proclaims, "Light of Christ." We sing in reply, "Thanks be to God!" Our salvation history is proclaimed through readings from the Old Testament and Psalms. During the GLORIA, the bells ring for the first time in two days. We fill the church with our voices singing, ALLELUIA and then we hear the Gospel proclaiming, "Jesus is raised from the dead!" The Paschal candle is used to bless the baptismal font that will be used in the celebration of the sacrament of Baptism. People receiving full initiation in the Church, who have completed their training, are given the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist.) This Mass will be live-streamed.
